From Workout to Work

Good Morning friends!  I went to Java Jog this morning for the second time in a row and it’s quickly becoming a highlight of my week!  I love the burst of energy I get from a good morning run, running with others keeps me motivated to push myself farther than I would if I ran alone, and the cup of free coffee afterwards is just the cherry on top!

I have to be at work at 7:30am each morning and the jog is at 6:30am.  As you can imagine, that doesn’t give me much time to freshen up before work and when I live on the other side of town, well there is no hope for a shower.  I’ve compiled various items that are absolutely necessary when going from a workout to work.  It’s proven to work for myself and I remain fresh throughout the day even though I’m unable to get a good shower after being gross & sweaty.  Luckily, my work is fairly close to the run, so I get to work a few minutes before everyone else and I can change & freshen up in the bathroom.

1 // Deodorant

2 // Body Wipes

3 // Razor, just in case (not a necessity)

4 // bobby pins (I don’t typically wear my hair down on this day, bobby pins help tame the mess)

5 // Face Wipes

6 // Baby Powder (helps absorb the sweat quicker & gives you a fresh feeling)

7 // Dry Shampoo (helps eliminate the appearance of greasy/sweaty hair)

8 // Make Up Bag

9 // Body Mist

I was quickly able to wipe off, throw some dry shampoo in my hair and toss it in a bun, change into my dress for the day, apply some lotion & a touch of makeup and be on my way.  I may not want to workout before work and get ready in the bathroom every day, but this routine makes it easy to do a couple times a week if necessary.  The coffee at Sneaky Beans was extremely hot when I got it to.  By the time I was dressed and at my desk to start work, it was the perfect temperature for drinking!  I’m looking forward to this being a weekly part of my schedule!

Questions of the Day:

  • Do you have any morning group runs in your area that you participate in?
  • What are your gym bag essentials?  What did I leave off that you use on the regular?

Steam Frying

Good Morning!

CAR TROUBLE

Today I dropped my car off at the shop.  I might have had an emotional break down on my way home from the mall yesterday when my car started making weird noises (plus other issues) and I wasn’t able to get in touch with Nick so he could tell me whether or not I should be worried.  So I worried.  He said I should go ahead and take it in to the shop since he won’t be able to look at it until this weekend.  The love I have for my car is deep.  I really hope it can be fixed, but if it ends up costing too much, it’ll be time to replace it.  I’ll keep y’all posted because I know you’re really concerned!

DINNER

Despite my break-down in the middle of a parking lot, the rest of the night turned out pretty great!  I’m loving this Whole Foods Health Starts Here Diet (Read about my Orientation).  It’s taking some time to learn how to manage it, but I think it’s getting better.  I had mushrooms, onions, and a bell pepper that I needed to saute.  We’re not allowed oil in our diet, so I had to steam fry them without the oil.  It worked like a charm too!  I watched this video from Whole Foods to learn how to do that.

I used part of that for veggie tacos.  I also made some guacamole to go with it.  I’m not allowed chips which is really hard because guacamole and salsa are really great on this diet, but I have nothing to dip with!  I’m still working on that!  The tacos turned out great.

That’s guacamole, brown rice, low-sodium black beans, steam fried green bell peppers, mushrooms, & onions, and salsa.

I then put a portion of the steam fried veggies in a container for mexican later in the week and then steam fried the rest of the veggies with a little soy sauce to go in the brown rice I pre-cooked on Sunday.  I’m really looking forward to that for lunch today!  I already taste tested it last night before putting it away and yes, it’s delicious!

I have a major sweet tooth.  I really didn’t consider that when I signed up for the challenge, but quickly realized that I have almost zero options for something sweet.  I went to the Whole Foods website to find a dessert I could have on the Health Starts Here diet.  I found a Banana-Cocoa Snack Cake.  I followed the recipe exactly except I didn’t add the shredded coconut on top.  The texture turned out like cake in my opinion, which was great!  The taste is a little different, but you eventually get over it and enjoy the fake brownie that’s 100 times healthier for you!  My parents had strawberry shortcake for dessert, so I decided I would put strawberries on it and see how it tasted – well, it’s wonderful!

I’m enjoying the creativity that’s flowing with this challenge!  Constantly thinking one-step ahead to be prepared for the next meal.  I’m spending a lot more time in the kitchen, which is one of their goals for the challenge.  I’m excited about seeing the results after a week.  I believe I’m noticing a slight difference in my energy level, which is good.  I feel like my face is clearing up some, but it could be that time during the month when that usually happens (basically a 3 day window of clear skin before “that time of the month”).  Hopefully that’s not the case and I’ll continue to see improvement there.  I’ll do a full re-cap of my first week on Monday!

WORKOUT

One thing I’ve been slacking on are my workouts.  I ran 2 miles on Monday, I attended a portion of my HIIT class – it’s only 30 minutes- on Tuesday (I was running late because of work) and then I haven’t done anything today!  I need to get back to running and incorporating a lot of those circuit workouts I did during my 21 Day Workout Challenge.  Once I get news of my car, hopefully all is well and I can go pick it up after work then make it to that dreaded 5:45 class that I promised I’d go back to.

BREAKFAST

At our week 1 Health Starts Here class, our Healthy Eating Specialist, Mary Lindsey, shared what she eats for breakfast.  It sounded amazing, so I decided right then and there to buy what I needed and give it a try.  It’s also super simple!  You use Ezekial bread (I chose the cinnamon raisin), peanut butter (I’m using the Whole Food 365 brand because it has no added oil or sugar), sliced banana, honey, and a sprinkle of cinnamon.  It was so good!  I paired it with a cup of Dunkin Donuts coffee with Almond Milk.

I’ve also been re-using my Whole Foods grocery bag for lunch.  It’s a lot nicer than the plastic bags I usually use and it stands up better.  I’m not worried about holes for my food or utinsels to fall through.

That’s the coconut milk I brought for work so I can have coffee.  I’m also loving the Whole Wheat Corn Muffins you see there.  You use honey and it sweetens them up – Delicious!

  • Have you tried Ezekial bread?
  • Will you try Steam Frying?

I had never heard of Ezekial bread, but really enjoy it now!  Even after the challenge, I will continue to Steam Fry when possible.  I don’t see any reason not too when my vegetables turned out delicious and I didn’t need added oil and fat to do that.

Thinking Ahead

Good Morning!

I hope everyone survived Monday!  Monday’s usually have the potential to “get in your head” and drag by!

I wanted to get into work early this morning for a client coming in, so BREAKFAST was quick & easy!  I went with 2 scrambled eggs and 2 pieces of blackberry jam toast.  Of course, with a side of coffee.

I’m on day 16 of my 21 day workout challenge and I’m feeling really great!  Last night I opted for a one hour walk so I wouldn’t be too sore for my HIIT class today.  This class is becoming obsessive, I love it so much!  I’ll have to share more about what we do in each class.  It’s always different!  I’ll try to make some mental notes this evening.

I need to work on creating an editorial calendar because it was a struggle coming up with a topic this morning… but hey, pinterest always helps!

THINKING AHEAD

We live in a society that is constantly thinking ahead.  I’m terrible about doing this – I’m looking ahead to my trip to Texas this weekend, I’m looking ahead to buying my own house one day, I’m looking ahead to Fall & Winter with Thanksgiving and Christmas, I’m looking ahead to weddings & trips we have planned the remainder of the year.

I know it’s somewhat in our nature to think ahead in this way, but I was wondering what created this almost “need” to look to the future.  I came up with a few reasons why we are constantly thinking ahead and what it is that encourages this.

(1) Social Media

I was looking through my pinterest feed the other day and realized that there was an excessive amount of halloween pins.  It’s mid-July, but we’re already prepping for what Halloween costumes we want to wear and what type of party we want to have.

(2) Retail Stores

It never fails that I hear some kind of complaint about Hobby Lobby putting out their Christmas items before Summer is over.  Because we plan early, we must buy early.

(3) Competition

We’re constantly competing with the Martha Stewart’s of this world.  It may take them a simple week to prepare a grand fiesta, whereas, ordinary people may need months to perfect every detail.  We’re constantly trying to overachieve from the previous year – whether it be with ourselves or our neighbor.

I don’t think this is a bad thing, honestly, I just try to remind myself that every now and then, it’s important to live IN the moment and not constantly look TOWARD the moment.  I’m all for the excitement that builds for fall & winter, Christmas & Thanksgiving, and the opposite for when we’re looking forward to summer.  I love a good party theme and planning ahead, but sometimes we get so caught up in the planning, that we forget to just enjoy.

I’m guilty of this too, so I’m definitely not pointing fingers here.  The views from society as a whole are not going to change, so we have to remind ourselves of this simple fact in order to get the most out of this life!

  • What activity do you complete to stay active, but not be too sore for a killer workout you expect the next day?
  • Are you constantly looking FORWARD to something, instead of enjoying the moment?
  • What tips do you have for living IN  a moment?
