TRAVEL

I’ve been lucky enough to visit Nick’s brother & sister-in-law in Florida at the beginning of July and my cousin and her family near the end of the July.  I have some amazing memories from both occasions and I can’t imagine how the trips could have gone any better!  I’m so thankful for the quality time I was able to spend with them as well as Nick and my friends, Lacy & Noelle.

You can see those recaps here:

2048

This is a new game Nick got me hooked on.  He always finds the most random apps and then I begrudgingly try them and then end up loving them!!  This game is SO FUN – at least for the nerdy part of me.  You get doubles to grow into larger numbers and the highest you can get is a 2048.  You try to not run out of tile.  Seriously, try it out, let me know what you think.  In the meantime, I’ll be over here playing.  Nick just informed me that once you beat the game, it unlocks the next level – 4096!  oh my goodness.. I just can’t wait!

BARE COCONUT CHIPS

I had originally heard about Dang Coconut Chips when Julie mentioned them in her “Things I’m Loving Friday” post.  Then when I attended Veg Fest Houston, they had a booth set up and I was really excited to try their coconut chips.  Lo and Behold, they were delicious!  The girls at the booth were super fun and I enjoyed talking with them!  I still need to re-cap my Veg Fest Houston experience!  For once in my blogging life, I feel like I have an abundance of posts that need to be written!  Back on topic… so when I made my way back to small town Mississippi, I tried to find Dang Coconut Chips in our local Whole Foods – no such luck!  I went with the only option we had, Bare Coconut Chips.  They ended up being really good and will have to be my go-to coconut chip in Mississippi.  Since I really enjoyed the girls at Veg Fest though and want to support Dang as well, I’ll be on watch when I’m out of town!

BEING OUTSIDE

I’ve been making my way to our local walking trail lately to get some runs in.  I’ve enjoyed the alone time and the nature.  It’s always calming & beautiful while I’m there (Yet another post I need to publish).  My workouts at the gym have been great, but there is nothing like fresh outdoor air!

PERSONALIZED COKES

This is by far my favorite marketing strategy in the history of the world!  I think the idea of personalizing cokes was a brilliant idea and I guarantee they saw an increase in sales.  I came across this one while I was waiting on my oil change.  It was the first one I saw that didn’t have a name which I thought was cool!  I picked it up because I like to believe that I really am a go-getter and that this diet coke was meant for me!

BIG BROTHER

Do y’all watch this show?  Me and my sisters have watched it for years.  We’re determined to get picked one year and be the major “twist” of the season as sisters in the house where no one knows that we’re related.  Clever, right?  I am loving Nicole & Christine this season.  I think they really understand the game and they’re playing smart – plus, they’re cute as can be!  Frankie is just fun to watch, he’s so animated.  Donnie is basically the nicest person who ever walked into the house, but he hasn’t exactly been the best player and I got really frustrated with him the week that Nicole was HOH and she tried to get advice from him and then he went and spilled it all to the house and played dumb as if she didn’t ask him to keep it to himself (she totally did) plus because they’re both such great people, I would have enjoyed them working together.  I also really like Derek, I think he’s playing a smart game and he’s probably one of the most level headed people in the game.  Who’s your favorite Big Brother player?

5 PICTURES THAT MAKE YOU FEEL BEAUTIFUL

Meg had a great idea to include this in our Bliss post for the month.  I’m sure we’ve all seen this 5 picture challenge floating around facebook and we definitely feel that Bliss and Beauty go hand-in-hand!  Here are 5 pictures that make me feel beautiful!

Digital Dementia

Good morning!

This week has flown by!  It’s been nice though because I’ll be heading to Starkville right after work and I’m excited to spend some quality time with Nick!  We haven’t done that since July 4th weekend because we’ve both been out of town the past couple of weekends.  It’s tax free weekend in Mississippi, so I know we’ll do a little shopping.  It’s time to get some new workout clothes because I’ve been working out a lot and washing my clothes is becoming quite the chore.  Also, I basically have a few pairs of running shorts to workout in and I need some more flexible items.  I’m also getting to the point where I’m wanting to look cuter at the gym.  Is that lame?  I want the adorable tank tops and sports bras, I want the cute little sayings and bows.  Well, we’ll see what I end up with over the weekend!

I really like these tops from livfit!  Except, not in yellow because that would wash me out.  Really cute look though.

Super cute workout clothes from LivFit....cheaper than lululemon! Based out of utah!!!!

Last night, I was in for a rude awakening when I arrived to the gym.  I thought I was running late for ab class & cardio blast.  I got there and was a tad confused because it did not look like people were getting ready for ab class and it did not look like the class was starting at 5:30.  I quickly realized I was in some other class, but heck, I was already there and I needed a workout for the day, so I stuck around.  True story: If I had known what I just signed up for, I would have left.  This was the hardest, sweatiest, most exhausting class of my life!  We did a hundred jumping jacks, probably thousands of burpees and squats, I learned that what I’ve known my entire life as a burpee is truly a half-burpee (WHAT?!) and there’s a such thing as a full burpee… that, believe it or not, sucks even more than a half-burpee.

There was a girl in there who was super encouraging and would come talk to me during “mini-breaks” to pump me back up because I’m pretty sure I had the look of death on my face.  Every time I talked, I just shook my head and glared.  Yeah, I’m super expressive.  Not very good at hiding my feelings from my face.  Before I left, she said, “Promise me, you’ll come back!” and I actually laughed in her face… but begrudgingly promised her that I’d be back next week.  What was I thinking?! – I guess I thought that I actually got a decent workout from it and it’d be good for my behind to be back there next Thursday at 5:45.

DIGITAL DEMENTIA

I recently learned this term, but it’s not a new idea to me.  I was reading a magazine that is published through my company.  It was talking about technology and the effect it has on children.  It was eye-opening!   I don’t have kids, but I’ve always been against the amount of technology that surrounds our society today.  Yes, I use technology myself [heck, I’m a blogger!] but I don’t believe 2 year olds need to be exposed to technology day in and day out!  I have been around kids that can’t have a proper conversation with you because they’re glued to an ipad.  Well, sure enough, it’s not just building a habit of being rude – it’s affecting what we most appreciate in kids – IMAGINATION.  Because of the significant use in technology, our right brain hemisphere is failing us.  The right hemisphere is responsible for imagination and rhythm.

It was sad to read, honestly.  Children are rude, unresponsive, and unimaginative.  I realize I have no children, so I don’t know what it’s like to keep them entertained, but I do know that we have previously lived in a society where it was possible to entertain without technology from all around us.  I personally hate having lunch with people who are glued to their phones the whole time.  One time, I was sitting at a restaurant where I saw a couple not engaging in conversation, but looking through their iphone – for more than a few minutes.  To me, that’s not a satisfying relationship.  Nick and I make it a point to not look at our phones during dinner together unless we come up on a subject that we want to research more (or if I need a blog pic haha).  We’re not mindlessly scrolling through instagram or facebook.  We’re not responding to other people’s texts and phone calls.  We’re engaging in conversation with each other.

I don’t plan on buying my child an ipad or iphone at an early age.  That topic will not even be up for discussion in my house.  I want my children to grow up respecting others, learning how to have adult conversations, living an active & healthy lifestyle.  They will be able to use technology, but their use will be restricted and monitored.  More than anything, I feel sad for the children who are “priveledged” to have an ipad before they can talk.  I don’t consider it to be a blessing, I consider it be a curse.  It’s unnecesary and it’s feeding into this “Digital Dementia”.

This has apparently been a big study in South Korea and they’ve even established “Internet Addiction Camps!”  Crazy!

I’m no expert or researcher, but I encourage parents to limit their children’s technology use.  I encourage non-parents to have a plan before you have kids on how to monitor the use of technology.  Turn the tv off during dinner.  Encourage conversation between your family.  The results will be positive – better sleep, better focus in school, a lower risk in obesity – there is no reason to allow your child endless hours of technology.  You don’t need technology to teach either.  I knew how to read & do math way before I started kindergarten.  I read books, my dad wrote out easy math problems for me to work – this was my entertainment.

Am I thankful for technology?  Yes.  Do I use it everyday?  Yes.  But I appreciate that I didn’t “grow-up” on technology.  I hope to instill that same developement in my children one day.

  • What are your thoughts on technology & children?  I’d love to hear from parents & non-parents!
  • Do you appreciate growing up without technology 24/7 or do you feel that you missed out?
  • Do you believe in the negative affects that technology is having on our society today?

Thinking Ahead

Good Morning!

I hope everyone survived Monday!  Monday’s usually have the potential to “get in your head” and drag by!

I wanted to get into work early this morning for a client coming in, so BREAKFAST was quick & easy!  I went with 2 scrambled eggs and 2 pieces of blackberry jam toast.  Of course, with a side of coffee.

egg-toast-breakfast

I’m on day 16 of my 21 day workout challenge and I’m feeling really great!  Last night I opted for a one hour walk so I wouldn’t be too sore for my HIIT class today.  This class is becoming obsessive, I love it so much!  I’ll have to share more about what we do in each class.  It’s always different!  I’ll try to make some mental notes this evening.

I need to work on creating an editorial calendar because it was a struggle coming up with a topic this morning… but hey, pinterest always helps!

THINKING AHEAD

We live in a society that is constantly thinking ahead.  I’m terrible about doing this – I’m looking ahead to my trip to Texas this weekend, I’m looking ahead to buying my own house one day, I’m looking ahead to Fall & Winter with Thanksgiving and Christmas, I’m looking ahead to weddings & trips we have planned the remainder of the year.

I know it’s somewhat in our nature to think ahead in this way, but I was wondering what created this almost “need” to look to the future.  I came up with a few reasons why we are constantly thinking ahead and what it is that encourages this.

(1) Social Media

I was looking through my pinterest feed the other day and realized that there was an excessive amount of halloween pins.  It’s mid-July, but we’re already prepping for what Halloween costumes we want to wear and what type of party we want to have.

(2) Retail Stores

It never fails that I hear some kind of complaint about Hobby Lobby putting out their Christmas items before Summer is over.  Because we plan early, we must buy early.

(3) Competition

We’re constantly competing with the Martha Stewart’s of this world.  It may take them a simple week to prepare a grand fiesta, whereas, ordinary people may need months to perfect every detail.  We’re constantly trying to overachieve from the previous year – whether it be with ourselves or our neighbor.

I don’t think this is a bad thing, honestly, I just try to remind myself that every now and then, it’s important to live IN the moment and not constantly look TOWARD the moment.  I’m all for the excitement that builds for fall & winter, Christmas & Thanksgiving, and the opposite for when we’re looking forward to summer.  I love a good party theme and planning ahead, but sometimes we get so caught up in the planning, that we forget to just enjoy.

I’m guilty of this too, so I’m definitely not pointing fingers here.  The views from society as a whole are not going to change, so we have to remind ourselves of this simple fact in order to get the most out of this life!

  • What activity do you complete to stay active, but not be too sore for a killer workout you expect the next day?
  • Are you constantly looking FORWARD to something, instead of enjoying the moment?
  • What tips do you have for living IN  a moment?
