Goodbye Alero, Hello Prius!

Last night was one of the most stressful nights of my life.  I made my very first Adult purchase and it was exhausting, scary, stressful, exciting, and confusing!

I think I did a really great job with my negotiating, especially with this being my first time!  I’m so thankful for the people in my life and their help throughout the process – I could NOT have managed without them.  Nick has been looking at cars for months.  He knew I’d need a new one in the near future and he had a good idea of what he wanted me to get as well as what would qualify as a “good deal”.  I was sad that I needed a car so soon in the future, but I’m thankful he had already been looking.  On Saturday, we went looking and I found a car I really liked, but I was nervous about my budget.  I found out last minute about a 2014 Prius that had a great rebate on it until Monday night and with all the traveling I do, the gas mileage was unbeatable.  I told the guy that I needed to talk with my dad to figure out if I could afford it and if it was a good decision.  Although I’m making my own decisions throughout the process, I’m the type of person who needs to talk through all the options to get a clear head.  On Sunday, Nick and I spent a good amount of time going over my budget and determining an amount I could afford each month.

The unfortunate thing about all of this was how quickly I needed a car.  I could either spend a couple thousand on another car that wouldn’t last me very long or I could invest in a newer car and build my credit, but stretch my budget a little.  It took me 2 days to determine what I wanted to do, but I finally had a plan in place and the negotiating began.

I went to the dealership with my dad and mom after work to sort it all out.  It was nice having them there to help me talk through decisions and I wanted them to see the car before I purchased it.  After 3 hours at the dealership, I finally left with my new car and I said goodbye to the Alero!

GOODBYE ALERO

The Alero has been on countless adventures with me and it’s been a very reliable car.  Ideally, I would have purchased a brand new Alero if they still sold them – that’s how much I loved my car!  I thought I’d round up some “memories” from my 7 years with the Alero:

  • Texas: I’ve visited my cousin quite a few times in this car.  Texas was the Alero’s very first roadtrip & very last roadtrip
  • Florida: It went with me to Disney when I did the Disney College Program.  It’s been back for multiple trips with Nick, including our 4th of July Weekend & Nick’s Graduation trip
  • Atlanta: I have lots of family in Atlanta and now that I’m out of college, I also have a handful of friends who got jobs in Atlanta.  Nick and I love visiting Atlanta!  I’ve taken it with just my family on holiday trips & I’ve taken it on weekend trips with Nick
  • Kentucky: My car has gone on a few trips to visit family in Kentucky.  It went for my great-grandmother’s funeral last August.
  • Nick asked me to be his girlfriend in this car and we’ve had many serious discussions in my car!
  • I’ve also had many serious discussions with other friends in this car.  Those have always been my favorite!

I am so thankful for the 7 years I got with that car!  I never had a major problem with it until recently.  Now I’m saying goodbye and although I’m sad about that, I’m excited about the new memories to be made in my Prius!  I’m in it for the long haul and I’m bound to gain more memories & more miles!

Survival Mode

Good Morning!  I don’t know about you, but I’m unbelievably excited that it’s finally Friday!  This week has been a doozy!  For those of you who are concerned about my car – there were a lot of problems and they basically told me it wasn’t worth fixing.  Nick’s coming home this weekend so he’s going to take a crack at it and see what he can do.  I’ll continue to keep you updated!  Hopefully I won’t end up car shopping because that was not on my list of to-do’s anytime soon!  Now on to our topic for the day.

SURVIVAL MODE

The first image that pops in my head when I think about being “stranded” is Tom Hanks & Wilson.  I imagine what I would do in that situation and the truth is.. probably die.  I’m honestly not sure how he actually survived that, but I guarantee he wouldn’t have without his pal.  If I was going to be stranded, here are the FIVE things I absolutely would not survive without!

1. Nick

There is no way I would be alive if I got stranded without Nick by my side.  He’s the handiest guy to have around for an event such as this.  He’s an Eagle Scout and has been on more campout’s than any other person I know!  He has a wealth of knowledge on survival and knows how to tie a ton of great knots.  I just don’t think there is any way I would make it without him!

He is clearly meant for the wilderness, y’all!

These pictures are from our Hiking Trip back in 2008!

2. A Camera

If I ended up stranded in the woods and survived, I’m fairly certain no one would believe me (of course, unless Nick was there with me the whole time).  I’m sure I’d find some great photographs though!  I’d absolutely need my camera to document the actual experience (how else would I come back to blog about it?) and get some beautiful pictures of nature (hopefully) along with “make memories” with Nick.  What other memories would be as exciting to retell than the time we got stranded on a deserted island!?  None.  So yeah, definitely need my camera!  Hopefully I would have bought a Go Pro Camera at this point, so I can attach it to my body while I hike and everyone could get the action from my point of view!  That’d be so cool!

3. Food & Beverages

I’m a girl who likes to eat and since I don’t plan on killing any of my food while stranded, I’ll definitely need some backups!  I’m sure the whole experience will be overwhelming too, so bringing along some beverages to calm the nerves is a must.

4. A planner

What if we end up stranded, but we find fellow-stranded people who become our friends?  How in the world would we plan gatherings if I didn’t have my planner?  Plus, I assume there is a lot that goes into survival and I need to know what days to graze for food, what days to resurface our hut or tent, and most importantly I’d like to keep track of what day it actually is for the sheer possibility that I survive and enter the real world again.  It’d also be a great way to document our adventure by writing down monumental events under each day.

5. Toilet Paper

I’m sorry, but wiping my butt with a leaf will not fly.  I’m going to need some legit toilet paper – not the crappy stuff!  If it’s one of the only luxuries I’m provided, I want It to be good!  I remember when we went camping, using the bathroom was one of the toughest parts for me.  I imagine if I’m on a deserted island, it’ll still be difficult, but the toilet paper will definitely brighten the mood.

Disclaimer:  This post topic was provided to me by Man Crates.  They have excellent gifts for men and they’re all packaged in crates.  I’m checking out some possible gifts for Nick since our anniversary is coming up in September!  I’m pretty sure he would love this Old School Crate.  Be sure to check out Man Crates when you’re not quite sure what to get your guy!  I realize not every guy is as handy as my guy is when it comes to the great outdoors (I have no doubt you keep him around for many other great reasons), but you should definitely get him an actual Outdoor Survival Crate pronto!

It's like you had the foresight to leave yourself a time capsule from your childhood.

Frozen Blueberries {Jackson, MS Whole Foods Sale!}

Who else is jumping up and down over a holiday weekend??!! Surely not just me!

Today when I get off at TWO, I’ll be heading straight to pick up Nick and then to Gainesville to stay with his brother & sister-in-law!  We’re going to a big fireworks show on the 4th and spending a day at Disney on Saturday!  Also…. THE FESTIVAL OF THE LION KING IS BACK!!!!!!!!  Y’all, this is my absolutely all time favorite show in the world!! It was closed when I visited in May, but it’s back and you can bet I’ll be there!  I’m lugging my huge old laptop with me so I can still blog though – seriously, that’s love!  I’m in desperate need of a new laptop that’s more travel friendly for easy blogging!

Let’s chat about yesterday though because it was a good day and deserves some attention!

I saw an announcement on our local Whole Foods Facebook Page about Blueberries on sale FOR A DOLLAR!! And to top it off, they were having blueberry pancake samples.  Needless to say, Whole Foods on my lunch break was an obvious choice.  I bought 5 cartons of blueberries – gave one to my parents, I’m taking one on our car ride this weekend, & then I froze the other 3 cartons.  I look forward to using my frozen blueberries in smoothies the next few weeks!

When I got home from work yesterday, I needed to pack, wash a few clothes, workout, eat dinner, & clean out my car.  I went ahead and got my WORKOUT in.  I did the 10 to 6 Workout again because I continue to feel like it defeats me and I’m so determined to complete the entire set of 10 to 6!

I got my area set up.  The gym was pretty dead, so I had plenty of room.  I’ve been pretty bad about bringing water to the gym, so I finally remembered that and believe me, it came in handy as I got farther into the workout!  I also brought a small notecard to write out my workout.  I’m going to start doing this because it really helped!

This time I made it 10 to 7.  Not because I couldn’t have finished off the 6, but my dad text me for DINNER in the middle of round 7, so I completed it and then left to go eat.  We ate at Newk’s which is my favorite place for a veggie pizza!  It completely satisfied my hunger after that sweaty workout!

I went home and cleaned out my car just before the sun set and then finished up my packing.  Now the Newt and I are waiting until it’s time for us to head out of town!  I’ve been Newt-sitting for Nick’s brother & sister-in-law since the move, so I’m sure he’ll be glad to be back home with his people!

newt-food

I also brought in my bag of food so the chocolate wouldn’t melt out in my car!  Once I hit Starkville, I’m grabbing a Starbucks and then it’s open road from there!  I’ll be checking back in with y’all tomorrow though.

Here’s some extra cuteness to start your weekend off with

cappie-2 cappie

  • Do you freeze your own fruit for smoothies?
  • If you can’t seem to complete a particular workout, do you go back and do it over and over until you can?
  • What’s your go-to Travel Essential? – For me, it’s Starbucks!
