Nick turns 27!

Good morning!  How is your week thus far? Mine is going very well, but I’m still behind on a lot of household and blogging stuff.  Nick just headed back up to Starkville though, which tends to make me more productive haha. I’ll probably see him again this weekend.

This past weekend was Nick’s birthday – he’s a whopping 27 now!  I’m going to be 26 next month.  I think it’s safe to say that we’re aging… my oh my.  We had a wonderful time celebrating.  When he got to town on Saturday morning, we headed out to brunch at Char and it was absolutely delicious!  We started off with an appetizer of Fried Green Tomatoes (my fave!) and then we both got different versions of Eggs Benedict.

Their onion strings are wonderful, I dipped mine in comeback sauce that came with our fried green tomatoes.  After brunch, we headed out to our next excursion – a tour of the only brewery in Jackson, MS – Lucky Town Brewery.  I attended their Grand Opening back in November and it was a lot of fun!  They do Saturday tours every single Saturday and for just $10, you get a souvenir glass with 6 half-pours of the beer they have on tap.  Back when I attended the grand opening, I missed out on the tour, so I was excited to see how they got started and how they brew beer for local production and sales.  They also have a second Saturday of the month event called Sippin’ Saturday which has the same set-up that the Grand Opening did – live music, food trucks, tours, and beer on tap.  Sippin’ Saturday is just $15 though and if it’s anything like the grand opening, then it’s going to be a lot of fun!

After the brewery tour, we did some shopping around town while we waited for dinner time.  We met up with some friends for dinner at Georgia Blue.  It can be pretty pricey, so we don’t eat there very often, but we love meeting up with friends there for a fun evening out.  They usually have some live music playing and they have a long list of beers on tap, so it’s fun to try something new.   We had another typical photo session – one decent picture and then one where I make a face thanks to Nick doing or saying something ridiculous lol.  This particular time may have been the person behind the camera though.  Our goofy looking pictures turn out to be some of my favorites though!

You might think that after being in Jamaica for a whole week, I would look a lot more tan, but you’d be very very wrong.  After dinner, our friends invited us over to their house for an evening by the fire.  I don’t know what it is about a good fire, but ending my day with one makes that day seem a lot better.  When you add it to the end of an already excellent day, then it may not get any better than that!

Nick’s first Marathon!

Good afternoon friends!  I’ve been MIA for a few days, but I’m about to catch you up!

I’ve been gone all weekend and I was excited to get back home to this sweet little nugget, plus I made it home a little early from work today since we had potential for freezing rain around here.  This Mississippi weather is absurd!  Luckily in 4 days, I’ll be flying to sunny and beautiful Jamaica.

Now let’s recap some weekend events – me and my sweet co-worker Bethany drove up to Starkville on Friday after work.  Her boyfriend also lives in Starkville, so we decided to start riding up together!  She’s such a great car ride buddy and we had good conversation throughout the whole trip.  We had a fun double-date that night at Old Venice Pizza when we got to town.  Unfortunately, I didn’t get a picture of our pizza, but I’ll say that it was extremely cheesy – way too cheesy for my preference.  I’ll have to keep that in mind next time so I can order light cheese.

Saturday morning, we headed out to Birmingham to get ready for Nick’s race.  We obviously stopped at Starbucks first to quench my undying love for the stuff.  Although, I’ve decided that I really need to cut back on my Starbucks addiction to save money.

Say hello to my delicious Cinnamon Dulce Latte w/ Coconut Milk.

We didn’t really eat anything before heading out, so we stopped in Tuscaloosa and found a cute Mediterranean place called Taziki’s.  I got a veggie gyro and it was wonderful.  The roasted potatoes were a little too lemony and I would have preferred fries, but I’m glad they included some chips with it for that saltiness.

On the way there, we discussed Nick’s game plan for the race and what he planned on wearing and how the weather would be.  I feel like Nick had a pretty good idea of how to handle his first marathon, he was a lot more calm than I would have been! haha  We arrived to Birmingham and headed straight to the expo where I picked up the packet.  We looked around and saw some good deals, but didn’t end up buying anything.  Of course, the very next day, Nick wished we had purchased a hand held foam roller for after he finished the race because his front calf was so extremely sore.  We did get some free slap bracelet’s that are reflective which will be great for some night runs.

After picking up the race packet, we headed out to the mall so I could do some swim suit shopping for my upcoming trip and I found 2 bathing suits, one red & one blue.  I also got a cover up, but I think I’ll be returning it – I didn’t like it so much when I put it on.  We were going to split a pretzel (my favorite snack ever!), but the line was long both times we passed by so we opted out.  After shopping, we met up with Nick’s dad, his girlfriend, and her grandson for dinner at Landry’s Seafood.   Nick got some seafood pasta to carb load.

The next morning we were up at the race early and Nick was ready to go!

pre-race

The race started at 7:03am and we were ready to spectate!  Nick started out wearing shorts, a short sleeve shirt, a long sleeve shirt, and a poncho.  After mile 1, he threw his poncho and long sleeve shirt to me on the sideline.  Luckily I brought a bag with me to carry all of our essentials for the day.  The route was a half marathon looping twice around for the full marathon so once I figured out where we needed be on the first half, I just followed the route again to catch Nick on the second lap of the race.  It honestly worked out so perfect and I’m so glad I was able to walk to various points along the route so I could cheer him on!

Here were some fun signs during the race:

  • Chafing the dream!  – probably one of my favorites.  haha
  • Runner’s High (Legal in all 50 states)
  • Hey Girl.  Your pace or mine?
  • This seems like a lot of work for a banana.

Nick finished out his marathon in 5 hours and 24 minutes!! Holy cow, I was so impressed!  He literally didn’t train for this race.  He did one 15 mile run 2 weekends ago, but that’s pretty much it.  He has been eating really well since he started the Engine 2 challenge at the beginning of the year, so I’m sure that helped a lot!  I would have literally died or quit if I tried to run a marathon with the amount of preparation he had.

Nick got to ring the PR! bell, yay!

I love the energy that a race brings – Kathryn and I are doing the Disney Princess half-marathon next year and we’ve both been to a race over the past 2 weekends.  We completely agree that it’s pumped us up for our race!  This will be Kathryn’s first half-marathon and I can’t wait to run it along side her and experience all the Disney magic & characters!  One day I’ll make it to my marathon, but at this point, with my knee, a half marathon will be perfectly fine with me right now!

After the race we headed back to Starkville and Nick passed out on the way there.  He was absolutely exhausted and admitted that doing the marathon was a lot harder than he expected it to be.  He felt really accomplished afterwards though, as he should.  The rest of the evening I helped him get adjusted back home before heading back to Jackson.

nick-sleeping

I have to say, it’s seriously lame, but when I woke up this morning, I had NOT completed a marathon, but my body sure did ache and I was completely exhausted.  I just kept reminding myself that Nick was the one who earned the right to complain about his aches and pains ha.  I did total up my walking distance though and I’d estimate that I walked at least 7 miles, probably more throughout the entire day.  Nick’s dad, his girlfriend, and her grandson joined me on the first half of the marathon, but I was a lone wolf on the second half.  They decided to head back to the car and relax for a bit.  I’m so glad I was able to be there to support him throughout the race and I was so proud as I watched him cross the finish line.

One day I’ll check Marathoner off my list, but that day was not yesterday.

I’m so proud of you Nick!

North Farm

Good Morning!  How was your Valentine’s Day weekend everyone?!  Mine turned out beautiful and you’ll see why shortly.

I headed up to Starkville on Friday after work and had a pretty low-key evening watching Friends, which has become a pretty typical day in my life!  I’m pretty sure this is my all-time favorite TV show that never gets old. I can play it in the background for hours & days & weeks & months… seriously, never gets old!

Saturday morning, I woke up and went to Starbucks with my sisters.  We had a few hours of conversation and of course delicious coffee!  Nick and I ordered the Engine 2 Diet book and My Beef with Meat by Rip Esselstyne, so I started reading while we were at Starbucks also.

After we finished up, I picked Nick up so we could have lunch with a good friend of mine.  We ate Mexican and I was able to meet her precious little baby boy!  He was the sweetest thing!  Pretty sure I’m in love with the 5-7 month age because I was head over heels for this little guy and I feel the exact same way with Nick’s nephew who is around that age.

After lunch we headed out to the baseball game and the weather was perfect on Saturday!  State played well and although there was another game at 4:00, we didn’t stay for the game to start.  Since Nick is doing my marathon next weekend, he wanted to go for a run, so we headed out to North Farm.  I started out running a little bit here and there, but eventually my knee gave me more trouble, so I ended up walking the rest of our time out there.  I need to go buy new shoes and see if they make a difference.  I feel like I’ve tried so many other things and I’m still stuck with this knee pain, that getting new shoes is the next step.  I’ll report back!

North Farm turned out to be absolutely beautiful on Saturday as the sun was setting!

Mississippi State University has a lot of land and we’re a big agriculture school.  We have some farm land that has a great gravel road that surrounds it.  The total circle comes close to 4 miles so you can get a fairly good run in.  As the sun was setting, I couldn’t help but snap some beautiful pictures of our Valentine’s Day activities!  Nick was running up ahead of me, so we didn’t get a picture of the two us together.

That evening, we hung out with my sister, made spaghetti, had King Cake, and watched This is Where I Leave You.  The night ended perfectly spending time with the people I love!

On Sunday morning, Nick and I headed out for Starbucks (yes, I can get obsessed on the weekends when I’m in Starkville.)  Surprisingly I watched more Friends with my sister while Nick did another run, and then before I left town, Nick and I had dinner at this local Thai restaurant!  I was really resistant to trying it, but it turned out delicious!!  I got the pineapple fried rice with tofu.

pineapple-fried-rice

I actually hope Nick and I eat there again soon!  The atmosphere is perfect for a date night – low lighting, quiet environment, and delicious food!  I’m learning to really enjoy tofu, Thai Siam did an excellent job on the tofu portion of my meal.  I’ve had my fair share of not so great tofu from restaurants (one in particular is when I ordered tofu that came cooked with meat, WTF?) so I’m always appreciative of great tofu!

Well I hope you all have a wonderful week – Talk to you tomorrow!

  • What’s your favorite TV show to leave on throughout the day that never gets old?
  • What did you do for Valentine’s Day?
  • Have you ever had Pineapple Fried Rice?
