Baby it’s cold outside!

Brr… Winter has finally hit Mississippi!  I went to Java Jog yesterday morning and it was one of our very first cold runs.  Thankfully I just got some leggings in that I wanted to try out.  They worked great and I look forward to wearing them this Saturday at my 5K.  I gave myself a sub 30 goal for the 5K because I’ve always wanted to do one that fast and just haven’t yet.  Granted, I haven’t done a lot of 5K’s the past few years since I’ve been running more heavily, but I still consider myself a very slow runner and my motto is usually “Slow and steady wins (or at least finishes) the race!”  I know sub 30 would be awesome to do though, so let’s hope I can pull it off.  For Java Jog, I met up with my usual running partner, Louise.  Her husband is the Marketing Leader at our local Whole Foods.  After running into Mary Lindsey the other night at Lucky Town Brewery, she decided to give Java Jog a try as well.  I finally feel like I’m finding my running buddies in Jackson.  I’ve had some great ones in the past, but it doesn’t always last long because of people moving or getting too busy to keep it up.  Mary Lindsey offered to run with me during my marathon training and all 3 of us stayed together throughout the run yesterday morning.  They’re the perfect pace for me – slow enough for me to keep up, but fast enough to keep me challenged.

After my run, I got my free coffee & I had a smoothie waiting for me in the car.  This smoothie is delicious and it has some great fruit & veggies.  One tip I learned from this recipe is to blend up your spinach first and then you won’t have an issue of your blender getting clogged.  Sometimes I get smoothie happy and throw a ton of stuff in the blender without realizing how it will all mix together and that I should have blended part of it beforehand.  I blended 2 cups of spinach with water, then added 2 bananas, pineapple, and mango.  It makes one large smoothie, but this was the perfect post-run treat on my way to work.

WEEKLY MENU

This week’s menu has been pretty good.  I’ve been trying to cook more of my Health Starts Here approved dishes and not eat out so much.  So far I’ve made vegetarian chili (still have some leftover), pad thai (didn’t turn out as good as I expected, but I’ll have to work on the recipe some), morning glory muffins (which have been a lifesaver in the morning and for snacking), the beginner green smoothies (pictured above), and I have plans to make a hummingbird cake on Friday.  I meant to make the cake earlier in the week, but just never got around to it.  Yesterday I did have lunch with my boss’ wife since he’s out of town the rest of the week and I’m having lunch with a friend today who is leaving for China next week to do missions for a year or so, but other than that, I’ve been very devoted to eating at home and eating healthy.

MARATHON TRAINING

Training isn’t going stellar, I’ll be honest, but it’s going….  On Monday, I did a 3 mile run on the treadmill at the gym.  On Tuesday, I did my favorite HIIT class.  On Wednesday, I did the java Jog which on my training is suppose to be 4 miles, but we did right under 3.  Today, I’m suppose to do 3 miles, but depending on how I feel, I may go for 4 since I missed that yesterday.  Friday I’ll rest to get ready for my long run on Saturday which is just 6 miles.  I have a 5K to get me through the first 3 and then I’ll probably go and do the course one more time to get through my second 3.  Overall, it’s going okay, but I have a lot of room to improve!  I need to better plan my eating schedule so I can be properly fueled for when I do my runs.  I also might talk to my boss once I get into longer runs about switching up my schedule some so I can either come in early and leave early or come in late and leave late so I have more time to get my longer runs in during the week.  Honestly, I’m not sure how he’ll take it, but I might as well give it a try.

  • What are your weekend plans?
  • What is your favorite smoothie?
  • Do you have any plans for a race?  Are you training for anything?

From Workout to Work

Good Morning friends!  I went to Java Jog this morning for the second time in a row and it’s quickly becoming a highlight of my week!  I love the burst of energy I get from a good morning run, running with others keeps me motivated to push myself farther than I would if I ran alone, and the cup of free coffee afterwards is just the cherry on top!

I have to be at work at 7:30am each morning and the jog is at 6:30am.  As you can imagine, that doesn’t give me much time to freshen up before work and when I live on the other side of town, well there is no hope for a shower.  I’ve compiled various items that are absolutely necessary when going from a workout to work.  It’s proven to work for myself and I remain fresh throughout the day even though I’m unable to get a good shower after being gross & sweaty.  Luckily, my work is fairly close to the run, so I get to work a few minutes before everyone else and I can change & freshen up in the bathroom.

2 // Body Wipes

3 // Razor, just in case (not a necessity)

4 // bobby pins (I don’t typically wear my hair down on this day, bobby pins help tame the mess)

5 // Face Wipes

6 // Baby Powder (helps absorb the sweat quicker & gives you a fresh feeling)

7 // Dry Shampoo (helps eliminate the appearance of greasy/sweaty hair)

8 // Make Up Bag

9 // Body Mist

I was quickly able to wipe off, throw some dry shampoo in my hair and toss it in a bun, change into my dress for the day, apply some lotion & a touch of makeup and be on my way.  I may not want to workout before work and get ready in the bathroom every day, but this routine makes it easy to do a couple times a week if necessary.  The coffee at Sneaky Beans was extremely hot when I got it to.  By the time I was dressed and at my desk to start work, it was the perfect temperature for drinking!  I’m looking forward to this being a weekly part of my schedule!

Questions of the Day:

  • Do you have any morning group runs in your area that you participate in?
  • What are your gym bag essentials?  What did I leave off that you use on the regular?

Easely Amused and Saturday Group Run

Good Morning friends!  Hope you’re enjoying this beautiful Saturday morning.  It’s not typical for bloggers to post on Saturdays I think.. at least that’s what I’ve picked up on over my years of blogging.  I think some do occasionally and others may post every Saturday, but for the most part bloggers “take the day off” or they schedule out all of their posts for the next week.  For some reason, I love a good Saturday morning blog post!  Since I’m awful at re-capping my weekends on Mondays, I’m going to go ahead and re-cap today because I’ve already finished up my weekend plans.  The rest of the weekend will be spent with my eyes on the computer screen watching videos for my Series 6 Exam that is scheduled for Thursday night at 6:30pm!  {Prayers are greatly appreciated!}  Also, I’ll be doing my best to stay around throughout the week, but if I end up missing the entire week (except for Bliss on Wednesday, of course) then just forgive me and expect me back up and running after the test!

EASELY AMUSED

Last night I joined some co-workers for a wine & painting night.  We have a local place called Easely Amused and they offer classes that you can purchase tickets for.  We decided to purchase the wine night tickets and have some girl bonding time!  Someone brought the sangria and the cups and then Easely Amused provided the canvas and paint and supplies.

That’s the progression of my painting!  I chose the saying, “Nothing’s better than a glass of wine… except maybe two!”  I had such a fun evening with the girls from work and I really enjoyed laughing and getting to know them on a different level.  We decided that a girls night/get together should happen quarterly.  Can’t wait to see what our next evening brings.  I got home around 10pm, so I’d call that successful night!

HEALTH STARTS HERE GROUP RUN

I woke up this morning with so much excitement!  Ever since I started the 28 day Health Starts Here Challenge, I’ve been looking forward to this group run with our local running store, Stinky Feet!  I got dressed and headed out the door.  Our group of challengers has gotten smaller and smaller each week, but I’m glad we still had some participation for this group run.   We met at Parham Bridges and did 2 laps which was close to 2 miles.  I made some new friends and kept a pace that I really enjoyed throughout the entire run.  The weather was perfect and Whole Foods brought some snacks for us afterwards – Lara Bars, Coconut Water, Bananas, and water.

I had such a fun time getting to know the people at Stinky Feet & enjoying the beautiful Mississippi weather we are having today.  I also got my workout in for the day so I can focus on studying for my test now!  Wish me luck, I’m off to study, study, study and hopefully find a few breaks here and there so I don’t overdo it!

Hope y’all have a beautiful Saturday with your families & friends!
