Whole Foods Market- my new phenomenon!

There are definitely some advantages to living in a big city, and I MUST say that having a Whole Foods Market is one of them!! Living in Mississippi, I had never been in one nor seen one, so I wanted to see what it was all about!! A friend and I chose to check it out one evening and we were superbly amazed at what all they had! If you’ve never been- when you get the chance, you should definitely check one out!!  Here are some pictures from my first experience!!

Why YES, I would love to build my own granola!
An olive bar?  No, I didn’t realize those existed! haha
Do you see this!? A WINE TASTING BAR!!
I almost passed out when I saw the coffee bean section!
Beautiful cakes and candies there too!

That bread looks so amazing!
Please tell me you see that large $40 cake in the center with the white top…
Because we totally got a free sample, and it was delish!
A section of dried fruits and more!

I had such a fantastic first experience, everyone was so nice and the creativity they have with their food is to die for!  They also had a large buffet with anything and everything you can think of!  It’s fantastic to find such a health conscious store when today you see so much processed food and unhealthy lifestyles.  I can’t say too much thought because I definitely enjoy my not so healthy food items, but seeing a store like this definitely encourages me to make better decisions!

I thought I’d share their values with you:
* Selling the highest quality natural and organic products available*
*Satisfying and delighting our customers*
*Supporting team member happiness and excellence*
*Creating wealth through profits and growth*
*Caring about our communities and our environment*
Creating ongoing win-win partnerships with our suppliers*
*Promoting the health of our stakeholders through healthy eating education*
Do you have a Whole Foods Market in your area? How often do you go? What are your thoughts on their items compared with their prices?

A new commitment: Practice Safe Sun!

As I was growing up we had a family friend who had suffered with Melanoma Skin Cancer.  She would tell me her story time and time again and if she ever saw that I had even a minor sunburn, she would remind me of the importance of wearing sunscreen.  Then, in highschool, I went through a minor tanning bed phase – honestly, I’m not proud of it.  But she would get so upset when she could tell that I was going to the tanning bed.  At the time, I really didn’t think anything of it… I just wanted some color to my skin and I never stayed really long.  Once I was in college for a year or two, I decided that going to the tanning bed really was stupid.  I was wasting money and hurting myself, so I quit right away.  Ever since then, I’ve never really worked on a good tan or anything, but I also haven’t been great about putting on enough sunscreen and putting it on frequently enough.  One good thing I started doing many years ago was using a moisturizer with SPF in it though, and that has been a must have for me!

So what prompted this SAFE SUN post??

Yesterday, as you know, I had my first day off in 15 days and my roomies were going to the beach.  Now, honestly, I’m not a huge beach person, I don’t go very often and it’s not my favorite place to vacay, but occasionally I find myself there.  Well, I applied my sunscreen like I should, and tried reapplying at one point, but since I was covered in sand it was so hard to do a good reapply.  By the time I got home, I knew I had a sunburn.  Right then and there, I decided it was time to start taking care of my skin because I don’t want to end up leathery and wrinkled from something that could have been so easily prevented.  I’ve seen Cosmo’s ad in magazines for a while now about practicing safe sun and I have decided to join in this!  I’m going to buy a bracelet that will help remind me of protecting my skin.

I really don’t see anything positive about laying out or going to the beach right now… 1. I always, ALWAYS, get a nasty tan line, I don’t know what it is, but I can never tan evenly 2. I don’t want to age badly and end up with leathery skin 3. pale skin can be just as beautiful as bronzed skin 4. I am protecting myself from skin cancer by not doing that and that in turn protects my future family from possibly losing me at an early age.

I’m going to pay the price right now for my sunburn and wait for the pain to go away, but at this moment, I’m making a commitment to practice safe sun and to try to always wear SPF even if it’s winter time and I’m not outside much or if it’s summer and I’m just driving from point A to point B… there are numerous ways you can harm yourself by not protecting against the sun and a lot of those ways are ones that you don’t even think of regularly!!

I’d like to hear your story- How do you feel about tanning/laying out/or tanning beds?  Do you practice safe sun or is that bronze look more important and you know you can suffer the consequences later? Do you have a personal story of how skin cancer has affected your life??

Is it really just a month? yikes!

Hello fellow bloggers- long time no blogging!  I know, I know.  I needed to go on a blogging vacay!! (don’t hate!)

Is it really just a month??  Well, I know, you’re probably wondering what I’m even talking about because like I previously mentioned, you haven’t been seeing much of me lately… DISNEY, is what I’m talking about though!  I only have roughly a month left on my college program at Disney.  It’s so exciting and I am more than ready to move back home, but I am struggling with the biggest change I’ll have to make… and that’s not living in the same state as my roomies here.  Ok, we can’t chat about that at the moment, or I’ll tear up… so moving on!

This past month I have been working my butt off… let me start off by telling you WHY —
I accepted a position back on campus, but it’s only a year commitment and it’s not salary paid.  I’ll be working for Americorps helping alleviate the impoverishment areas of the Mississippi Delta.  I will receive a living allowance and I will have health benefits, but I won’t be making much money, so I started picking up shifts left and right at work to create a nice little savings buffer to help get me through the year.  Needless to say (as I know I’ve mentioned time and time again), Disney over works and under pays.  I have had a total of THREE days off the entire month, today will be my 15th day straight to work and like I said, I’m honestly not making a ton of money for the crap work they make me do every day haha.

After a tiresome week and my emotions running high, I came to a realization and a new plan the other day.  I’m going to work the schedule they give me and finally start enjoying my days off without picking up shifts because like I said, I have ONE MONTH left!!! It’s time for me to reap the benefits of being a Disney Cast Member – free admission to the parks, laying out by the pool, having the time to eat right and workout.  That is my new focus!!

Next week, I have three days off, so I’ll be enjoying myself out by the pool and getting every thing done within the parks.  I want to be able to leave Disney and say that I have literally ridden every ride they have – so Monday I’m going to get a map of each park and cross off everything I’ve done and make a list of everything I need to get done in a month.

Sure, I could really use the money, but to me, the money isn’t worth it if I’m completely miserable all the time, extremely over exhausted and over worked where I don’t have time to get in a proper workout and make proper meals for myself.

I’m excited about this new turn for my last month at Disney and I’m ready to get back home for at least another year!!

And I’ll also use some of that free time catching up with the lovely lives of my blogging buddies!

Happy Friday, my lovelies, and for once… YES, this is actually a Friday for me because I have tomorrow off and I’ll be going to the beach with my wonderful roommates! 🙂
