Goodbye Alero, Hello Prius!

Last night was one of the most stressful nights of my life.  I made my very first Adult purchase and it was exhausting, scary, stressful, exciting, and confusing!

I think I did a really great job with my negotiating, especially with this being my first time!  I’m so thankful for the people in my life and their help throughout the process – I could NOT have managed without them.  Nick has been looking at cars for months.  He knew I’d need a new one in the near future and he had a good idea of what he wanted me to get as well as what would qualify as a “good deal”.  I was sad that I needed a car so soon in the future, but I’m thankful he had already been looking.  On Saturday, we went looking and I found a car I really liked, but I was nervous about my budget.  I found out last minute about a 2014 Prius that had a great rebate on it until Monday night and with all the traveling I do, the gas mileage was unbeatable.  I told the guy that I needed to talk with my dad to figure out if I could afford it and if it was a good decision.  Although I’m making my own decisions throughout the process, I’m the type of person who needs to talk through all the options to get a clear head.  On Sunday, Nick and I spent a good amount of time going over my budget and determining an amount I could afford each month.

The unfortunate thing about all of this was how quickly I needed a car.  I could either spend a couple thousand on another car that wouldn’t last me very long or I could invest in a newer car and build my credit, but stretch my budget a little.  It took me 2 days to determine what I wanted to do, but I finally had a plan in place and the negotiating began.

I went to the dealership with my dad and mom after work to sort it all out.  It was nice having them there to help me talk through decisions and I wanted them to see the car before I purchased it.  After 3 hours at the dealership, I finally left with my new car and I said goodbye to the Alero!

GOODBYE ALERO

The Alero has been on countless adventures with me and it’s been a very reliable car.  Ideally, I would have purchased a brand new Alero if they still sold them – that’s how much I loved my car!  I thought I’d round up some “memories” from my 7 years with the Alero:

  • Texas: I’ve visited my cousin quite a few times in this car.  Texas was the Alero’s very first roadtrip & very last roadtrip
  • Florida: It went with me to Disney when I did the Disney College Program.  It’s been back for multiple trips with Nick, including our 4th of July Weekend & Nick’s Graduation trip
  • Atlanta: I have lots of family in Atlanta and now that I’m out of college, I also have a handful of friends who got jobs in Atlanta.  Nick and I love visiting Atlanta!  I’ve taken it with just my family on holiday trips & I’ve taken it on weekend trips with Nick
  • Kentucky: My car has gone on a few trips to visit family in Kentucky.  It went for my great-grandmother’s funeral last August.
  • Nick asked me to be his girlfriend in this car and we’ve had many serious discussions in my car!
  • I’ve also had many serious discussions with other friends in this car.  Those have always been my favorite!

I am so thankful for the 7 years I got with that car!  I never had a major problem with it until recently.  Now I’m saying goodbye and although I’m sad about that, I’m excited about the new memories to be made in my Prius!  I’m in it for the long haul and I’m bound to gain more memories & more miles!

TRAVEL

I’ve been lucky enough to visit Nick’s brother & sister-in-law in Florida at the beginning of July and my cousin and her family near the end of the July.  I have some amazing memories from both occasions and I can’t imagine how the trips could have gone any better!  I’m so thankful for the quality time I was able to spend with them as well as Nick and my friends, Lacy & Noelle.

You can see those recaps here:

2048

This is a new game Nick got me hooked on.  He always finds the most random apps and then I begrudgingly try them and then end up loving them!!  This game is SO FUN – at least for the nerdy part of me.  You get doubles to grow into larger numbers and the highest you can get is a 2048.  You try to not run out of tile.  Seriously, try it out, let me know what you think.  In the meantime, I’ll be over here playing.  Nick just informed me that once you beat the game, it unlocks the next level – 4096!  oh my goodness.. I just can’t wait!

BARE COCONUT CHIPS

I had originally heard about Dang Coconut Chips when Julie mentioned them in her “Things I’m Loving Friday” post.  Then when I attended Veg Fest Houston, they had a booth set up and I was really excited to try their coconut chips.  Lo and Behold, they were delicious!  The girls at the booth were super fun and I enjoyed talking with them!  I still need to re-cap my Veg Fest Houston experience!  For once in my blogging life, I feel like I have an abundance of posts that need to be written!  Back on topic… so when I made my way back to small town Mississippi, I tried to find Dang Coconut Chips in our local Whole Foods – no such luck!  I went with the only option we had, Bare Coconut Chips.  They ended up being really good and will have to be my go-to coconut chip in Mississippi.  Since I really enjoyed the girls at Veg Fest though and want to support Dang as well, I’ll be on watch when I’m out of town!

BEING OUTSIDE

I’ve been making my way to our local walking trail lately to get some runs in.  I’ve enjoyed the alone time and the nature.  It’s always calming & beautiful while I’m there (Yet another post I need to publish).  My workouts at the gym have been great, but there is nothing like fresh outdoor air!

PERSONALIZED COKES

This is by far my favorite marketing strategy in the history of the world!  I think the idea of personalizing cokes was a brilliant idea and I guarantee they saw an increase in sales.  I came across this one while I was waiting on my oil change.  It was the first one I saw that didn’t have a name which I thought was cool!  I picked it up because I like to believe that I really am a go-getter and that this diet coke was meant for me!

BIG BROTHER

Do y’all watch this show?  Me and my sisters have watched it for years.  We’re determined to get picked one year and be the major “twist” of the season as sisters in the house where no one knows that we’re related.  Clever, right?  I am loving Nicole & Christine this season.  I think they really understand the game and they’re playing smart – plus, they’re cute as can be!  Frankie is just fun to watch, he’s so animated.  Donnie is basically the nicest person who ever walked into the house, but he hasn’t exactly been the best player and I got really frustrated with him the week that Nicole was HOH and she tried to get advice from him and then he went and spilled it all to the house and played dumb as if she didn’t ask him to keep it to himself (she totally did) plus because they’re both such great people, I would have enjoyed them working together.  I also really like Derek, I think he’s playing a smart game and he’s probably one of the most level headed people in the game.  Who’s your favorite Big Brother player?

Fresh Water Pearl – Japan at Disney World

Nick and I went to Disney World for 4th of July Weekend, Here’s the re-cap in case you missed it:

  • Independence Day 2014 Weekend

Ever since I was in the College Program at Disney World, I’ve wanted a Fresh Water Pearl from Japan at Epcot!  I never got one because (1) I was afraid it’d be too expensive (2) It was way too busy or (3) I’m ridiculously indecisive.  Every time my roommates and I would go to Epcot, I absolutely loved going to Japan!  It’s my favorite place to browse in Epcot and I would always stop and watch others open their oysters and receive their pearls!  Once I left the College Program, I never failed to mention it on every trip back – this trip over the 4th of July weekend was no exception!

The conversation went something like this…

Me: I think I’m going to get a Fresh Water Pearl this time!

Nick: Oh good, you always say you want one

Me: Yeah… but then again, I don’t know if I should spend the money

Nick: Heather, you say you want this every single time you come, you should get it!

We get to Japan.

Me: Let me ask how much it is

Sweet Japan Man: $17 for pearl, then you can pick your setting.

Me: Oh ok, let me look around and think about it

Walk around the store a little bit

Me: I kind of like this (a purse, some chopsticks…. whatever!), Maybe I should get this.

Nick: No, go get your pearl.  You’ve always wanted one!

Me: Well okay then!

I got all giddy inside and was really excited when I finally decided I would purchase my own pearl.  I knew I wanted a pearl ring, and I honestly liked the simple look of their cheapest setting, so being the frugal one that I am, that’s what I went with!  Pearl – $17    Ring Setting – $35

The process was a lot of fun and very easy.  They give you a numbered card and when your number is called, you get to pick your oyster from the fresh water.  Being that I’m indecisive, this process caused me a little bit of anxiety at the time.  I finally picked the oyster I wanted though.  Then the super excited Japanese girl teaches you how to count 1, 2, and 3 [Sun, Knee, Itchy].  Then she cracks open the oyster and seeks out the pearl.  They say that the average size is 6.5!  She started measuring mine and it went all the way up to 7.5! [In all honesty though, I saw quite a few pearls opened and all of them were bigger than 6.5]  Then she goes on her drum to let everyone know that you got a large pearl!

I then went and picked out my ring setting and was told it would be ready in an hour!  At this point, Nick and I had to take a picture with Minnie & Pluto (I get a free 5×7 with the Chase Disney Visa Credit Card I have) and then we came back to pick up my ring!

I originally purchased it to go on my right ring finger, but my fingers were a little swollen from the humidity that day and I accidentally got it one 1/2 size too big for that finger, so now I wear it on my left pointer finger.  I got it as a size 4.5, but I need a size 4.  Nick’s sister-in-law, Kathryn, thought that was insane!  I’ve always had really small fingers though, even after popping them practically my whole life!   Having recently worked at a jewelry store this past Christmas season, I know I can get “speed bumps” to tighten my ring which I think I’ll do at some point so I can wear it on my right ring finger again!

I’m absolutely in love with this ring and it will always remind me of the most perfect day Nick and I had at Disney!

  • Have you gotten a fresh water pearl ring before?  Where at?
  • Are you like me about purchasing things for yourself?  I have a hard time buying something unless I know I really want it or really like it!  This makes me very indecisive sometimes.
