The small things can be a jewel in your crown! Elevator Diaries [part 2]

Some of you may remember my post called Elevator Diaries [Part 1].  I posted it a while back, so let me re-cap.  I work in a residence hall on campus, so you can imagine that I run into some pretty interesting things said and done by freshman students on the elevator to and from my office each day.  I started that post in hopes of having a ton of interesting topics to discuss, well now we are only on to the Elevator Diaries [part 2].  I hear interesting things, for sure, but nothing all that blog worthy.  That’s alright though, because this one is a WONDERFUL story and a thought provoking topic!

So, the other day, I arrived to work about 15 minutes late.  Our parking lot has a small ‘staff’ section and a large ‘resident only’ section, so when you’re late, you’re REALLY late, because you’re now cruising around for a parking spot all over campus!

Please refer to my very artistic drawing of my office parking lot!
There are times when I choose to “cheat” the system.  I’ll park in resident parking and won’t get a ticket.  On this particular day, I was driving through resident parking and I saw a spot, an open spot, and a relatively close open spot (but it was resident).  I also saw another girl driving her car around who was in fact a resident of South Hall and was in fact, allowed to park in that spot.  And I knew from driving around a few times, that the pickings were slim in the resident parking this day as well.  So I decided it would only be fair to not steal the spot that I could so easily take and let the resident girl have it, so I did.  I continued on my way, looking for a spot.
I ended up parking in the gravel lot far away (not even on my map y’all!) and it did happen to be resident parking because there literally wasn’t a staff spot available, in addition to that, I had a meeting at 8:30, so I needed to get going!  I knew I’d probably get a ticket where I was at.
Later that day, I was going down the elevator telling some co-workers what I had done.  How I had given that resident girl her spot and I had received a ticket, but it just seemed only right to have given her the spot.  There were 2 resident girls riding down the elevator with us and they were overhearing my story, and as we got off the elevator, one of the girls turned to me and said, “You earned a crown in heaven for that!” and I thanked her and didn’t think anything about it right away, but when it really sank in, I began to seriously treasure the words she spoke to me and I knew they were words from God!
There are things in life that we can choose to do or not do.  For the most part, it’s small things, like letting someone else have a parking spot that I desperately need and we think to ourselves that we’re just being nice and it’s no big deal, but when you think about it, it IS a big deal!  Every small good deed and kindness you show towards another human being earns you another crown in heaven.  How easy it is for us to find ourselves being selfish over the small things, when our reward can be so much more than a closer parking spot, it can be a crown!
I wish I knew who that girl was and where I could find her to tell her how much I appreciated her words.  They just rolled off her tongue, like no big deal!  As if she tells every person who does a nice thing for someone else the same thing all day every day!
I wanted to share this experience with y’all to remind you that the small things you do for people that sometimes you think go unnoticed, will be rewarded with an extra crown in heaven.  I also wanted to remind you that there are times when we are in such a rush that we don’t think about doing small things for others and if we just paused for a hot minute, we could have the opportunity to show love, even when we feel hate, and to show peace, even when our life feels at war, and we could earn an extra crown in heaven instead of a selfish mark on our hearts!
Hope y’all are having a wonderful Wednesday!

That was so nice of you to do, and of her to say! Sometimes it’s the littlest things that make such a big impact on us and others!

How nice! I remember back in college the cheapest parking area on campus was called Pig Lot. Granted its been built up since I graduated in 04 but it was the lot next to the convention center that you either would walk to your dorm or catch the shuttle for. Well on the weekend if you were a resident you could move your car to a closer spot that normally would sell for 2x the price of Pig Lot. Let me tell you if you got one of those you were in heaven!

Love this! Little things are sometimes the only things that we can do for others. All those little things add up to something VERY BIG and it is important to remember that!

Love! I would have been floored to hear a complete stranger say that, but it gives me hope in the world that not all people are jerks. Thanks for sharing lady!
