I got a dog!

True story.

I did.

He’s so ugly and strange looking that he’s the most adorable thing you ever did see!

His name is ACE.

Say hello to my sweet (sometimes grouchy) dog named Ace.

How did I acquire such an adorable dog, you may ask?

Well…… Nick’s brother &  sister-in-law got Ace 10 years ago when they got married.  He was a mutt and the shelter said no one would adopt him because he was so ugly, so they gladly took this “ugly” dog.  Well, fast-forward 10 years later…. Trey & Kathryn head up to Mississippi to avoid Hurricane Irma.  I mentioned a few times that I would LOVE to take Ace, but typically my work schedule doesn’t allow for a dog.  This semester has been different though and I’ve been home a lot more.  Trey would gladly accept my offer because Ace definitely comes with his own set of frustrations, but since Nick and I are getting married soon, we had to get Nick on board.

Trey & Kathryn were headed back to Florida and didn’t have room for the dogs (they have 2) since they were taking tools and gasoline back.  We offered to dog sit for them until we made our trip out in October.  I thought this would be the perfect time to test the waters and see how Ace did at my house.  Well, basically… I fell in love with him and he’s spoiled rotten now!

We traveled back to Florida with both dogs and enjoyed a visit with Trey, Kathryn, & Cade and a short, but sweet, trip to Disney!  Nick finally made the decision, moments before we left, that I could take Ace home!!

Ace can be a grouchy old man (He’s around 12 years old!) and he is picky about certain things and doesn’t always play well with others, but when he’s a loner dog… he’s literally the BEST!  I have the perfect little doggy door for him that he uses throughout the day, he loves to cuddle in a smothering sort of way, and he’s sweet as can be when you’re on his good side!

His favorite toy is a tennis ball.  That’s all he cares about.  I was rolling my foot a lot in September and he was so jealous of my tennis ball!

Lastly, I’m going to leave you with this hilarious meme!  Ace doesn’t tear anything up so it doesn’t exactly pertain to him, but I think dogs in general give you this pitiful look when they KNOW that they just did something wrong, but they expect you to love them anyways!

  • Do you have a dog?  If so, what kind of dog?
  • What’s your pet’s favorite toy?

Happily Ever After {Engagement Story}

Hi there friends!

Today is a fun day on the blog because I’m sharing our engagement story!  I wanted to do a Q & A session regarding our engagement so it’s not just me babbling on about what happened.  If you have more questions, please feel free to drop them in the comments and I’ll make sure they get answered.

Where did you get engaged?

DISNEY WORLD!  Yes, no surprise there!  We had been planning a trip to Disney for a few months and it was the perfect place for us to get engaged because Disney has been such a huge part of our relationship over the years.

When did you get engaged?

We got engaged in May!  We were trying to fit in a trip before all the schools were out and Disney got crowded and overheated.  More specifically: Wednesday, May 17th, 2017.

Were you surprised?

I know this will come as a surprise to some of you or you’ll say that I’m lying, but I honestly was surprised IN THE MOMENT.  I knew there was a possibility as we were planning the trip and I knew that Disney would be a great place for us to get engaged, but Nick is the best secret-keeper I know.  He did not provide me with any hints leading up to Disney; however, I knew he wouldn’t so I still thought there was a chance.  Our trip was Friday-Friday and our trip was almost over by Wednesday.  I literally told myself multiple times that day that it was OKAY that we were not getting engaged.  Nick wasn’t acting weird or nervous or anything!  By Wednesday, I was certain it wasn’t going to happen… and then it did, later that night!

How did he propose?

We had plans to watch the new fire works show at Magic Kingdom on Wednesday night.  The previous show was called “Wishes” and they had literally started the brand new show the week we arrived called “Happily Ever After!”  We arrived to Magic Kingdom just in time for the show and found a spot on Main Street.  It was a lengthy show and there was a lull in the middle that we both assumed was the end.  He was planning to propose at the end of the show.  I was standing in front of him and was turning around to say how great the show was and there he was on one knee.  I said “Are you serious?” a few times and finally responded “YES!”  At that point, we realized that it was in fact NOT the end of the show.  We finished up the show and then I started asking a bazillion questions!

Who did you tell first?

Well, Nick’s brother & sister-in-law were in Orlando with us that night so when we saw them again the next morning, they were the first people we told.  At that point, I called my sisters to tell them and then waited to tell anyone else until later that day.  My parents were both working so I called them that evening and then we spent the rest of the evening calling important people in our lives.

When are you getting married?

We are getting married in February, so that gives us about 9 months to plan a wedding!  After being together for almost TEN years, we didn’t want a long engagement, but I also wanted to be realistic about how long it would take me to plan a budget friendly well executed wedding.

What are some favorite experiences post-engagement?

  1. On our drive back home, we stopped at Trey & Kathyrn’s.  They had a cake, champagne, and a wedding magazine waiting for us.  It was the first “celebration” we experience post-engagement.
  2. Our engagement party was perfectly Disney themed and I could not have imagined a more perfect engagement party than what our dear friends provided us.
  3. Having my cousin in town was extra special to me.  We worked on wedding stuff, she helped me through some emotional struggles (that later proved to be a thyroid issue that I have corrected), and she met a lot of my friends and Nick’s family.  It meant so much to me that she drove to Mississippi to visit for a few days!
  4. All the little conversations that Nick and I have about wedding plans or post-wedding items that we need to do!

What about the RING??!!

I have a beautiful Square Halo wedding ring.  I wear a size 4 which is still slightly big, but apparently you can’t order a 3.75?  Or if you do, it’s expensive!  I love it though!  I bought a second ring immediately after for Enso.  It’s a plum purple thin twisted rubber ring that I can wear for Fun Run days.

What has been your least favorite thing about being engaged?

Hmm… That’s a toughy! I think I really struggled during my thyroid issue and it was my least favorite moment up to this point.  Thinking that my anxiety and depression and lack of motivation had something to do with the wedding plans and with Nick took a tole on me.  In my mind, I knew that couldn’t be the case, but emotionally, it was eating away at me.  I was so thankful to discover the thyroid issue during a very stressful time so that I could go ahead and get it corrected before things get more hectic.  And honestly, that cleared up a lot of other issues I had been dealing with!

  • Were you surprised about your engagement?
  • Who else has gotten engaged at Disney World?
  • What was your least favorite thing about wedding planning?
  • Who was the first person you told about your engagement?

1 Mile a Day Challenge

Good Morning & Happy Monday!

Wow wow wow wow wow…. I did NOT realize how long it had been since I had blogged.  I didn’t mean to leave this little space of internet for almost a year, but it happened!  It’s been an interesting year and I’ll recap a good many things eventually (one of which being, my engagement!!)  All in all, I have missed blogging like crazy over the past few months and I’m excited to be back here.

Boosterthon

First, let’s chat real quick about my new job update over the past year!  I made the switch from Northwestern Mutual to Boosterthon this past January.  Northwestern Mutual made a lot of changes and I was not very happy with my updated responsibilities and role within the company.  My sister started working with Boosterthon last Auguest, so when I was looking for a change, I reached out to her about opportunities within the company.  She recently accepted a promotion in Birmingham and I was able to accept her position in Jackson.  It worked out perfectly, you could say.

What is Boosterthon & What does an average day look like?

Boosterthon is a fundraising company for elementary schools.  We use a fitness & character based two-week program to raise funds kicking off with a Pep Rally and ending with a Fun Run.  In a few words:  It’s a whole lot of FUN!  We work around a school schedule.  Over the course of the two weeks, we’re offering challenges, motivating students, visiting their class rooms, playing games with them, and sharing character lessons.

1 Mile a Day Challenge

One thing that I absolutely LOVE about this company is the person growth that they encourage and reward!  There is always a monthly challenge offered and for the month of September, it was the 1 Mile a Day Challenge.  Have you heard of this challenge before?

I had recently heard about doing a 1 Mile a Day challenge from my friend/co-worker, Amy.  Amy has been doing 1 Mile a Day since January 1st and has rocked the challenge up to this point!  A few days before they announced the challenge, I was chatting with Amy about possibly doing this challenge for the new year like she did.  Then, Boosterthon announced the challenge and I thought it was the perfect opportunity to test it out.

What I learned:

  1. It gave me the confidence to do what I set my mind to do: I have given up on other 30 day challenges before and this showed me that once I set my mind to it, I can do it!   This was one of the first challenges I completed 100% all the way through.  It’s all about commitment.
  2. I can push myself: There were a few days that I did NOT want to run and days when I would have loved to just walk, but I pushed myself to always run no matter what.  Also, I ran a few sub 10:00 runs which was empowering for me.  I’m not a fast runner and those runs always made me so proud.  There were 5 Fridays in September and 4/5 of those were Fun Run Days, which are extremely exhausting.  I wake up way too early to do it in the morning, so I had to push myself to do them after Fun Run Day when my body hurts more than it ever hurts.
  3. Disciple, Reward, & Commitment: I felt really disciplined by the end.  It’s not a “Will I?” attitude, but an “I will.” attitude.  Every day got easier mentally because I had continued to build that habit.  Also, the reward of the medal from Home Office kept me moving forward day by day, step by step.  Halfway through, I asked myself “Why would I give up now?”  I kept working towards that reward!  It was a committed mindset that kept me from giving up.
  4. Accountability is KEY!: Luckily, I had my friend Amy who was proof that this challenge can be done and on days when I wasn’t feeling up to it, I would text her and she would provide encouragement.  Also, I was posting on Facebook and Instagram so I knew people were watching and cheering me on.

Overall, I really LOVED this challenge and I definitely plan to do the year long challenge for 2018 like my friend Amy.

The fun part about the September Challenge is that Boosterthon offered rewards for completing it!  If you did the 1 Mile a Day every day in September (30 days) then Boosterthon would send you a medal.  I’m excited to get that in the mail soon!  Another really cool reward they offered – that I had NO hope of earning haha, but that I think is super cool – is that the person who logged the MOST miles in September, would win an Apple Watch!  YES – an APPLE WATCH!  How cool is that?  The girl who accomplished that had to average about 9 miles a day though so surely she’s training for something?!  Right?

  • Have you ever done the 1 Mile a Day Challenge?
  • Would you be interested in doing the 1 Mile a Day Challenge?  If so, for how long?  A week?  A month?  6 months?  A whole year?
  • Has your company ever gone through a reorganization that caused you to seek something different?
